What Is Birth Trauma — And How Can a Doula Help?
April is a time of new beginnings, but for many mothers, the arrival of a baby can come with unexpected emotional wounds. Birth trauma is more common than most people realise — and it’s something we need to talk about.
What Is Birth Trauma?
Birth trauma refers to distressing or frightening experiences during labour and delivery that leave a lasting emotional impact. It doesn’t have to mean a medical emergency. For many women, birth trauma stems from feeling unheard, unsupported, or out of control during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
You might recognise it as:
• Flashbacks or nightmares about the birth
• Feeling disconnected from your baby or your own body
• Anxiety about future pregnancies
• A sense of grief about how your birth unfolded
You are not alone. Research shows that one in three women in the UK describes their birth as traumatic. One in 25 goes on to develop PTSD as a result.
Why Is It So Common Right Now?
The UK’s maternity services are under enormous pressure. Midwives are overstretched, and many women report feeling rushed, dismissed, or left alone during labour. Continuous, compassionate support — the kind that has been proven to improve birth outcomes — is simply not always available on a busy labour ward.
This is where a doula can make a profound difference.
How a Doula Can Help Before, During and After Birth
Before birth: Your doula takes time to truly know you. We talk through your hopes, fears, and birth preferences so that you feel genuinely prepared — not just informed, but emotionally ready.
During labour: Having a consistent, familiar face with you throughout labour — someone who advocates for you, helps you communicate with medical staff, and keeps you grounded — is one of the most powerful things you can do for your birth experience.
After birth: If your birth didn’t go the way you hoped, postnatal doula support gives you space to process what happened. Sometimes just having someone sit with you, listen without judgement, and help you make sense of your experience is the first step toward healing.
