Zoe-A Doula With Heart and Expertise.

About Zoe and Ma Doula.

Hello, I’m Zoe Sylvester, founder of Ma Doula. I’m an accredited birth and postnatal doula, with a background as a teacher and headteacher. After more than 30 years supporting children and families, I know parents don’t just need information — they need calm, experienced support from someone they can trust.

Ma Doula was born from my passion for helping parents feel confident and supported. Whether you are preparing for birth, recovering afterwards, or navigating early parenthood, I offer calm, compassionate and experienced support tailored to your family’s individual needs.

My Doula Story.

I am a mum to three wonderful grown up sons and grandmother to two precious little ones., Violet and Elio. I live in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, with my husband, our youngest, our gorgeous Labrador Pip, seven chickens and several fish. It is a busy, happy home!

My own birth experiences were very positive. My first son was born in hospital, while my younger two were born at home with my husband by my side. Those experiences helped me appreciate that every birth journey is unique.

After more than 30 years working with children and families—including seven years as a headteacher—I chose to follow my passion for birth work. Today, I combine those experiences to help parents feel informed, confident and supported as they make decisions that are right for them

My Approach to Doula Support.

Every family is different, so my support is always centred around you. I combine practical help, emotional support and evidence-based knowledge to help you feel informed, confident and cared for.

  • Helping you feel empowered: I'll support you to understand your options, ask questions and make informed decisions that feel right for you.

  • Support that's led by you: There is no one "right" way to experience pregnancy, birth or parenthood. I'll walk alongside you, adapting my support to your individual needs and wishes.

  • Respecting your values and choices:
I'll always respect your beliefs, background and decisions, creating a safe, non-judgemental space where you feel heard.

  • Consistent support
From pregnancy through birth and beyond, I'll be a calm, familiar presence you can rely on.

Why I Love What I Do

Being part of a family's journey is a real privilege. Every pregnancy, birth and baby is different, and I never take for granted the trust families place in me. I love helping parents feel calmer, more confident and truly supported during one of the biggest moments of their lives.

The name Ma Doula was inspired by my granddaughter, and it reminds me every day why this work means so much to me.

  • "I was so lucky to have Zoe as my postnatal doula. From day one, she was incredibly intuitive and seemed to know exactly what needed doing without me having to ask or explain, which was such a relief with two little ones to juggle. She always made a real difference each day she came, whether by helping around the house, supporting me emotionally, or just bringing calm and care into our home. She’s also a fantastic cook and happy to try any recipe. I admit I was initially unsure about the value of having a postnatal doula, but Zoe completely changed my mind. I couldn’t recommend her more highly, she was amazing and I’m so grateful for her support."

  • “Zoe makes me feel very comfortable around her. She has a calm demeanour and fun at the same time. She doesn't only get work done but also always asks about how I/we feel, and she listens without judgment.”

    CW from Watford

  • “Zoe’s strengths are her experience in education, her empathy and her calm, confident nature. She always made me feel reassured and I felt safe having her take care of the baby and spend time with my toddler- both adore her! We developed a great rapport which meant Zoe could share advice freely which I found very useful.”

    SD from North London

  • “Zoe is so warm and approachable and easy to connect with so I’m sure she will make a very supportive doula. Also, her depth of experience in childcare and education will bring a valuable perspective to support new parents.”

    TSC from Somerset

  • “Both my husband and myself are happy with the support Zoe provided to us. Her calm personality with positive energy, empathetic approach, and work ethic have exceeded our expectations and really contributed to the good postnatal recovery I was looking for. Like I said, I am particularly impressed by her cultural awareness and the fact that she thinks in our shoes.”

    CW from Watford

  • "Zoe was available and supportive throughout my long first stage of labour, visiting our home and providing the reassurance I needed to labour at home. She was fantastic in the hospital, ensuring my birth preferences were understood. I was able to have a VBAC, which I genuinely don't think would have been possible without Zoe's support."
