A Nourishing Start to your Day

Postpartum granola for new mothers and how a doula can support You

If you're preparing to welcome your baby — or maybe you've just brought your little one into the world — you already know how important it is to feel nourished, supported, and cared for.

In those early days of postpartum recovery, your body is healing, your hormones are shifting, and your heart is expanding in ways you never imagined. Having simple, nutrient-rich foods on hand — like homemade postpartum granola — can make a world of difference.

And so can having the right support by your side. As a birth and postnatal doula, I'm here to ensure you feel seen, nurtured, and truly held as you cross into motherhood.

This morning, I made a fresh batch of my favourite postpartum granola recipe, adding a generous splash of vanilla extract for an extra comforting flavour. As the scent filled my kitchen, it reminded me how much little acts of care — like preparing nourishing food — can soothe both body and soul during this tender time.

Let’s dive into why postpartum granola is such a beautiful gift for yourself (or a new mother you love) — and how having a doula as part of your support team can transform your postpartum experience.

Why Make Postpartum Granola?

When you’re healing after birth, good nutrition is crucial. Here’s why postpartum granola is one of my go-to recommendations for new mothers:

  • Boosts Energy: Oats provide slow-releasing energy — perfect for the unpredictable rhythms of newborn life.

  • Supports Breastfeeding: Ingredients like oats, flaxseeds, and brewer’s yeast can naturally boost milk supply.

  • Rich in Nutrients: Nuts, seeds, and dried fruits are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats for postpartum recovery.

  • One-Handed Convenience: Easy to eat while nursing, cuddling, or settling your little one.

This simple granola is a wonderful way to nourish your body while gently supporting your recovery journey.

My Favourite Postpartum Granola Recipe

This is the very recipe I made this morning — quick, easy, and so nourishing.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups rolled oats

  • 1 cup raw almonds, chopped

  • 1 cup raw cashews or walnuts

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds

  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds

  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseeds

  • 2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast (optional but highly recommended for breastfeeding mums)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (melted) or olive oil

  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup or raw honey

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (this small addition makes a big flavour difference!)

  • 1 cup dried fruit (such as apricots, cranberries, or figs), chopped

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 160°C (325°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

  2. Mix oats, nuts, seeds, flaxseeds, brewer’s yeast, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl.

  3. Whisk together the coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla extract.

  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients until well coated.

  5. Spread evenly on your tray and bake for 20–25 minutes, stirring halfway.

  6. Cool completely before stirring through the dried fruit.

  7. Store in an airtight container — ready whenever you need a quick, nourishing snack!

How to Enjoy Your Postpartum Granola

  • Serve with Greek yogurt for a protein-rich breakfast.

  • Snack by the handful during night feeds.

  • Pour over almond milk for a quick, satisfying meal.

  • Pack in small containers for easy hospital bag or nappy bag snacks.

Nourishment Goes Beyond Food: How a Doula Supports Your Postpartum Journey

While foods like postpartum granola nourish your body, emotional and physical support are equally vital after giving birth.

As an expereinced birth and postnatal doula, I’m here to:

  • Help you create a postpartum plan tailored to your needs.

  • Offer emotional support as you navigate the joys and challenges of new motherhood.

  • Assist with breastfeeding guidance and newborn care.

  • Prepare nourishing meals and snacks like this granola.

  • Provide a calm, reassuring presence so you feel deeply cared for.

Having a doula means you are not doing this alone. It means having someone to remind you that your wellbeing matters just as much as your baby's.
